Specification
ISO 4014 Hex Head Bolts have coarse external machine screw threads, are partially threaded and mate with nuts and tapped holes. Their dimensions are similar to DIN 931 except the hex head width across flats (wrench size) for three sizes—M10, M12 and M14—is 1 mm smaller like ANSI B18.2.3.1M. Compared to JIS B1180 sizes M8, M10 and M12, head width across flats of ISO 4014 is 1-2 mm larger. Select from Class 8.8 and 10.9 steel and either zinc plated or unplated plain finish, which can rust. Thread tolerance is 6g for plain finish and 6h for plated; right-hand threads are standard. Commonly referred to as hex head cap screws, minimum length of the threaded section is based on bolt size—larger bolts have more threads. Measure their length from under the head to the tip.
The iso 4014 hex bolt can be surface treated to a variety of coatings. For instance, it can be coated with zinc by either electroplating (clear (blue) zinc electroplated and yellow zinc electroplated) or by immersing the fastener in zinc during hot dip galvanization. Other surface treating techniques include the fasteners being treated with finishes like auto black, dacromet, geomet and phosphate. Plating the alloy may also be used to increase the iso 4014 bolt weight.

An the size range for threads ranging from M1,6 to M24 and nominal lengths up to and including 10d or 150 mm, whichever is the shorter for product grade B.
l Commercially, the steel quality used to manufacture of the iso 4014 grade 8.8 bolts includes grades A2 and A4 class 70. The tensile strength for both these steel grades is around 700 Mpa. The strength of the iso 4014 bolt m10x18 is indicated by the marking on the head and it is also defined by the applicable product standard. The A2 version of the iso 4014 bolt material is manufactured from Stainless Steel grade 304, which is known for its Corrosion Resistant properties.
l This can be attributed to the high content of chromium and nickel in the alloy of the iso 4014 bolt m8x15 (Metallurgically, the A2 or the ASTM-304 has a designation of 18/8 Stainless Steel or 18% Chromium & 8% Nickel). Although the A2 is mostly considered to be a non-magnetic austenitic stainless steel grade, some residual magnetism of the alloy can be introduced when the material of the ISO 4014 Bolts are cold worked.
l Similar to the A2, the A4-70 iso 4014 bolt material specification is an austenitic, acid proof stainless grade. Usually, the A4-70 is manufactured from stainless steel grade 316 material or its low carbon variant grade 316L. stainless steel grade 316 has been cold worked to provide a minimum tensile iso 4014 bolt strength of 700 MPa.
l As compared to stainless steel grade 304, grade 316 provides better overall corrosion resistant properties. This holds true particularly as grade 316 stainless steel has a higher resistance to both pitting as well as crevice corrosion in chloride environments. The good corrosion properties of the iso 4014 hex bolt manufactured from grade 316 stainless steel can be attributed to the high molybdenum content in its alloy.
